Another modern station, Bhubaneswar station to be upgraded

By Samiran Sarangi

Bhubaneswar, Dec 27: In a significant move, the Railways have decided to construct a new station, laced with all modern amenities close to Raghunathpur village between Patia and Barang junction.

Sources in the East Coast Railway said the station would constitute a vital part of the ambitious Khurda-Barang third line project. The project is being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. at an estimated Rs 133.34 crore. The purpose behind move is to de-congest Bhubaneswar Railway Station, ease the burden on the existing railway network and streamline the traffic on the Khurda-Barang stretch. The section has seen an exponential growth of traffic over the years.

Bhubaneswar station itself would be augmented with two more platforms. The pressure on the city station today has come to such a point that express and mail trains are made to wait at peripheral stations before a platform is vacated for the next train.

The new station, which will be approximately 2.8 km from the Barang-end will be named New Barang station. Work on the station is likely to be completed in two years. It will be developed as a model station comprising six platforms, the length of which can accommodate 26-coach trains. There will also be nine running lines and a seprate space for a coaching complex. Once commissioned, both mail and express trains would halt here, gradually depending on the demand and operational convinience.

Besides helping in the development of the Patia-Chandaka indudtrial belt, the station would also cater to the rapidly expanding city towards Nandankanan. The location of the station would also be beneficial for major technical institutes, upcoming software technology parks and the high-end residential complexes. Real estate prices in Patia and adjoining places have already zoomed.

The exisiting Barang junction station would cease to remain a full-fledged station once the new station becomes operational. However, it will continue to remain a passenger halt.
